Journey to the Centre-4508

‘For centuries, Hollow Earth conspiracy theorists have tried to prove that there’s a whole other world beneath our own. But first they need to find the way in…’

In the newspaper publishing industry, today marks the start of what is known as

‘The Silly Season’

the time of year when the senior reporters and high-ups of the media world decamp from the metropolis to go and lie, for around a month, on a sun-soaked beach somewhere – preferably exotic – leaving the minions in charge of filling the newspapers with whatever stories they can find – or invent!

On ‘Googling’ for information on the film ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ I found this article in the Telegraph and ‘the silly season’ immediately sprang to mind. Here’s the link to the Hollow Earth conspiracy theories article, hope you enjoy this silly story to kick-off ‘The Silly Season’.

Cheers to King William IV

Cheers King William-0900

The King William IV is a delightful country style pub discovered while Mr E-D was in hospital.  After visiting him one Saturday evening, we spotted this lovely black and white pub on the way home and stopped for a meal. We all chose the beer battered fish and chips supper which was absolutely delicious.

Mind the Gap

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes my way for Mr E-D, I really appreciate your kindness. Surgery has been required and he’s now recovering, so I hope you will not Mind the Gap in service from me from time to time for a while here on the blog, as I have quite a long journey to and from the hospital every day.

It’s great to see everyone’s black and white photos, they really give me a lift and I’m very grateful that our fledgling community endeavour is thriving so well – what a super bunch of people you all are. Ellie 😀

Looking at You-0847b

Looking away, looking at mobile phones, looking at you {looking at me}

I took this at Blackfriars Station while waiting to get a train back home.

On returning, I found a very poorly Mr E-D who was subsequently whisked into hospital as an emergency, diagnosed with diabetes. All being well he should be discharged tomorrow (Thursday).

Managing (just about) to view everyone’s beautiful black and white new photo posts, I’ll be catching up with comments as soon as I can.

In the meantime, please welcome Angela, the first Kiwi to be adding variety and spice to The Monochrome Muse. Take at look at her gorgeous ingredients photo … mmm, mmm, there are recipes galore on her website thesweetexplorer.com

A Beatle in Streatham, London

This is the first ever portrait photograph I have taken of a complete stranger – I have much to learn! To discover the inspiration for undertaking this (to me) daunting task, visit the ‘100 Beautiful Strangers‘ project of Monochrome Muse Chloe, (The Girl Who Clicked).

When I explained Chloe’s project, this sociable gentleman was absolutely charming about having his photograph taken, although he categorically did not want to look at the result on the camera screen, explaining he never, ever looked at photos of himself!

Thanks Chloe for the inspiration – this is my Beautiful Stranger #1. Shaking so much after taking this photo, I completely forgot to ask the gentleman his name, so I will forever know him as ‘A Beatle in Streatham’. Next time (if I pluck up the courage again) might be easier and I’ll think more about positioning my subject away from distracting doors in the background!

Do you shy away from taking portraits? This is a good way to learn more about taking them while connecting with some amazingly friendly and obliging people. First of all, do make sure you feel safe and comfortable before approaching anyone – I was out with my husband and daughters for Sunday Lunch in a traditional, London, family oriented pub.

Raindrops on Roses

White Rose

Today dawned grey, wet and a little windy; quite good conditions, I read somewhere, for flower photography. Very little or no wind would be ideal but to capture raindrops (in between showers on this occasion) just a little patience with shutter button half depressed, resulted in reasonable sharpness.

Taken in monochrome, then both black and white clipping tweaked very slightly in Lightroom.

One from my iPhone photo-stream archives; an old iPhone 3G photo – hence the quality! Although I’ve upgraded since this photo was taken (as far as an iPhone 4S to date) Phone Photography is not something I seem to do much of…. wonder why?

How about you, are you a phone photograper?
